    J.J. Abrams + Star Wars??!!

I really, really hope the news about J.J. Abrams directing the new Star Wars movie is true.

It seems like all the articles out there are citing the same anonymous source with no quotes from him, but I hope. I hope, I hope. He would’ve been my first choice all along, but I just didn’t see it happening because of Star Trek. After Star Trek came out in 2009, I kept saying “Can you imagine how much better the Star Wars prequels could have been if Abrams had been around to direct them?” (Well, CAN YOU?)

Of course, it’s possible that the “source” who called it “a done deal” did so with the intention of initating a media freakout over the news, just so Abrams would feel too inspired/awkward to back out after seeing everyone’s excited reactions…in which case, let the record show that THIS IS YET ANOTHER POST OF EXCITEMENT. INTERNET, HEAR ME.

These are two of Reddit user Terry Cook's Star Wars watercolor paintings. The rest are equally as awesome and you should go check them out here

The thing I like best about them is that each one would work beautifully as a stand-alone piece. I feel like lots of painting sets lose coolness if you only buy/hang one painting, but not these. I can just imagine one of them blown up as the accent piece for a room. And apparently you really can order prints directly from the artist. Sweet.

Before May 4th is over, I thought I’d share the sticker I wore to the Avengers premiere last night! I felt Joss would approve.
I was thinking I’d write a review of the movie and say something super witty like, “because the Internet totally needs another review of The Avengers, right?” But now, my feelings about the movie can be best expressed with math:
The Avengers + Joss Whedon = YES.
Seriously, I think Joss writing and directing was the best thing that could’ve happened to the film. There are so many moments/jokes that are so Joss, but work so well in the context of the film that it’s like the Doublemint Gum of Nerd Heaven. (“Double your pleasure? Double your fun?” OK, bad joke.) I think writing Iron Man’s dialgoue was probably the most natural fit for Joss, because Tony has so many lines that make you think, “That is SO Tony and SO Joss. AT THE SAME TIME.” In fact, as I was watching the movie, I started to think that I should just compile a list of awesome quotes instead of writing a review. But then that would get spolier-ish. And hey, look, I wrote a review anyway! …Because the Internet totally needed another one, right?

Happy Valentine’s Day from TGO! I thought this would be a good excuse to go all fangirly on you and post some of my favorite romances from geekdom. (Cue dreamy sigh.) Click a photo to see a larger version and character names! I do realize my straightness is showing, and I apologize for all that heteronormativity up there. Ahem.

However, regardless of who your Valentine is this year, I’ve got you covered! Not sure what Valentine message to write for that certain person? I humbly suggest the following:

For your significant other (or crush):

    "I’m so TGO over you!"

    For your friend:

"I love the way we TGO together!"

    For your BFF:

"No one understands my TGO moments like you!"

    For your relative:

"Thanks for tolerating my endless stream of TGO episodes!"

    For your pet:

"Thanks for keeping my lap warm even when I TGO!"

    For your celebrity crush:

"I’m TGO over your Google Images results!"

    For your fictional character crush:

"I’m TGO of my mind over our imaginary adventures together!"

    ~

I think that covers it! (You’re welcome!)

There doesn’t seem to be a way to link each photo to its source, but most of them are either from fan sites or screencap galleries.

Finally, to all my lovely readers/followers, I’m TGO over you! Happy V-day!

    This happened.
Some cool person grabbed some crayons and carved them into Star Wars characters, and now it’s just another thing I have to simultaneously cross-file under “How is this so awesome?” and “How did this JUST happen?” and, most irritatingly, “Why did this idea never occur to me?”
I mean, I carved into crayons like anyone else. But it never produced anything artistic. In fact, when I got bored in class as a child, I liked to pretend the crayons in my desk were fish and my pair of scissors was a shark, and then have it “bite” the crayons.
You know…I guess I just answered my own question.

  17. WISE WORDS

"It’s underneath what’s going on. It’s the criminals and the gangs. The guys who are running Wall Street, basically… They take place between Episode III and Episode IV. That 20 year period when Luke is growing up. It’s not about Luke, but it’s about that period when the Empire is trying to take things [over]."

Rick McCallum in an interview with IGN on his potential live-action Star Wars series, under the working title “Star Wars: Underworld.”

This is actually the first I’ve heard of this idea, but that premise makes it sound genuinely cool. Of course, lots of other factors would come into play (plot and characters, perhaps?), and the series might still be a few years away from production. Still, I think this is definitely news worth following.

When was the last time you saw anything even close to this awesome?
This is a metalwork sculpture created by French artist Alain Bellino, and you can see process pictures here, which reveal that those eyes are actually two spoon ends fused together. Love.
Can you imagine people’s reactions if you had this on display in the entryway of your mansion? Everyone would get to TGO as they came inside… Sounds good to me (the mansion, too)!

  21. WATCH THIS

This is a promotional interview segment apparently filmed before the release of The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. The interviewer/narrator has a fairly annoying voice, but it’s worth watching for the insights from the cast, including David Prowse (Darth Vader) and Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), as well as director Irvin Kershner. Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, and Harrison Ford are also present, and I just can’t watch retro Harrison Ford without realizing what an amazing voice he had! I just fanned myself, and it’s freezing in here!

I can’t even imagine how exciting it would’ve been to have been alive in 1980 to see this on TV (if it ever aired) and TGO so hard at all the sneak peeks and hints at surprises and did I mention Harrison Ford already? One thing worth noting is that several people, including the interviewer, mention that George Lucas has plans for nine films total. I was under the impression that was an unfounded rumor, but apparently not!

A while back, Jason Derulo released the song “Ridin’ Solo,” which contained lyrics like “I’m jumpin’ in my ride, I’m headin’ out tonight, I’m solo, I’m ridin’ solo.” This made me think, someone should really set this to clips of Han Solo being awesome. And then I couldn’t help but like the song, because it made me think about Han Solo being awesome.

So, it is with a huge swell of happiness that I bring you this video of Han Solo Ridin’ Solo by vilicles on YouTube. Discovering that it existed kept me smiling for days, and there are actually several other versions on YouTube. But, after so many careful viewings my brain was temporarily rendered numb to both Star Wars and R&B, I chose this one, because, while it’s not perfect, I thought it generally demonstrated the best choices of footage (though I still haven’t recovered from Han grinding Jabba set to the lyrics “goin’ to the club everything’s alright”).

If you’ve never heard the song, note that it WILL get stuck in your head, to which I say: you’re welcome.

This is a great moment (in fact, probably one of my all-time favorites) from last night’s episode of How I Met Your Mother, in which Barney explains how Ewok appreciation is directly related to the age someone was when they first saw Return of the Jedi

I think he’s definitely onto something. I was indeed a little kid when I first saw the Star Wars trilogy, and I did LOVE the Ewoks. The part where the baby Ewok gets scared of C3P0’s story melted my stuffed-animal-loving heart. And afterward, my other little kid friends and I even wanted to “play Star Wars” by pretending to be Ewoks. Yeah.

New sympathetic response for the next person my age who says they hate Ewoks: “Oh, your parents didn’t let you watch Star Wars until you were older, did they?”
